How good it is to do nothing and rest afterwards

Collins Cove History

One of the few remaining small-scale cottage colonies that were once common on Cape Cod, Collins Cove offers a unique history. The cottages were built in the 1920s out of material found on the grounds as well as lumber from the former Chatham Naval Air Station. The main house, now known as “Number One” was the home of the Collins family for several generations. The five waterfront cottages were built first, followed by the sixth that sits slightly further back from the water. Many unique details including original furnishings, antiques, and water views make these cottages a welcome location to enjoy family and friend gatherings.

The “Shuckin’ House,” is a small building by the main docks on the property. When it was originally built, it housed a shellfish business, run by Bernard C. Collins, Sr. who, with local fisherman, would shuck the catch of the day and ship it to the fish piers of Boston. The next family operation run out of the small building was a boat rental business, called the “Collins Fish and Fiddle Club,” the legacy of which still remains in the sign that reads “Siesta Time is from 12 – 2pm.” The business was run by Bernard C. Collins, Jr. who also created its playful logo and slogan, which are still used to represent the cottages. For many years the “Shuckin’ House” was the headquarters for family patriarch and historian, Ken Collins, who would hold court and recount his many stories. Now the building again acts as home to a thriving shellfish business run by Glenn, Ken’s son, and his sons. If you stop by when the house is open you may see the many framed memories that line the walls and at low tide you can learn about aquaculture from one of the family shell-fishermen!

Today, the cottage colony remains a true family business, cared for with love by the current generations. Year after year, guests return to find comfort in the seemingly unchanging landscape. The same over-sized petunias and other flowers flourish by the docks, and the same friendly faces return to enjoy a summer by the sea.
